Visiting the Salt Mines of Cardona

Visiting the Salt Mines of Cardona

October 02, 2018

Located just shy of 60 miles from Barcelona, the Salt Mountain and Mine allows visitors to learn about the interesting geology of Cardona. This makes for a great half-day trip for those that are visiting Barcelona or other nearby areas. Up until the 90s, salt was actually still being mined here and today there are quite a few remnants of that. Here is what you need to know if you plan on visiting the Salt Mountain and Mine:

Tour Information

It's estimated that in 65 years, over 37,800,000 tons of different minerals were extracted out of the mine. On a tour, visitors can see some of the tunnels and chambers that were originally used during the mining process. Tours take place on the weekends every half hour and twice a day during the week. Individuals interested in a tour will need to meet at the La Muntanya de Sal Visitors Center, located by the former mine buildings. They will then hop on a minibus that will transport them to the mine's entrance. Once there, they will be given helmets that they will be required to wear during the tour. Each tour lasts about an hour and visitors will get to see around 500 meters of tunnels and numerous salt formations.

On each tour, there will be a guide that talks about the history of the mine and the salt formation. However, it's important to note that the tours booked on-site are currently only conducted in Spanish. Many visitors who do not speak Spanish still find the tours very enjoyable. Some day-trip tours throughout Spain booked independently can involve an English-speaking guide, though. While you can purchase tickets once you get to the visitors center, this isn't recommended as they are very limited. To ensure that you will be able to get tickets, you should purchase them online, well in advance. In addition to the actual mine tour, there are mine buildings that you can see. When planning a visit to the Salt Mountain and Mines you should expect to spend a couple of hours there.
